Case: the word and surname are both synonymous with knives. Since the Civil War, The Case family has played a critical role in establishing- then dominating- the American cutlery industry. But the whole story of how an interrelated clan from a little valley in western New York came to learn the trade, selling imports then battling them and often times one another, is truly extraordinary.
So focused on quality and superiority, the assorted branches of the Case family were torn apart. There were too many relations for one industry - Champlin, Crandall, Platts, Brown, Burrell and of course Case. Feuding publicly and ferociously, parting ways then starting up cutlery companies of their own, culminating in no less than 32 individual concerns over their 140 year history.
